We spend a lot of time at work. Some of us even consider the office our home away from home (although we don’t like to admit it). But, does it ever feel like something’s missing?
Workplace culture doesn't always get the attention it deserves. A healthy culture means people are engaged at work. And, when people are engaged, productivity soars.
But, let’s face it: annual off-sites and monthly manager meetings aren’t enough. People need more than a few scattered touchpoints to know they’re valued members of the team. When culture is spotty (or worse, non-existent), it can negatively impact every single part of your business.
People need to feel like what they do matters. They should be encouraged to not only contribute to the company’s overall success with their work, but to have their voices heard. If you don’t make it clear that peoples’ ideas and work are valued, they lose focus and their motivation starts to fade away.
An ongoing conversation
We’ve talked before about the importance of employee-to-employee communication, but it’s worth repeating. You can’t have a culture where people feel valued if their voices aren’t being heard. Encourage people to share their thoughts on recent news, submit improvement ideas for your products, or vote in a poll that helps the company decide an outcome. The more ways you can get people talking, the more they’ll want to talk.
Work doesn't have to be boring
A healthy culture can make work fun again – but it can’t be forced. It isn’t as easy as paint on walls or fancy coffee machines. And, it’s not about arcade games and hover boards either (although, if you ask the team here at Igloo, they totally help). True workplace culture is all about people: their stories and relationships. And, most importantly, it’s about making it easy for people to work together to achieve common goals.
Don’t know where to start? How about right at the beginning? When you’re onboarding new employees, show them they chose a great place to work – right from day one. With tools like a people directory, a wiki for company processes and policies, and a news blog showcasing your company’s latest achievements, Igloo can help new hires get up to speed in a matter of weeks, not months.
