A company can’t continue to succeed if its people aren’t on the same page. Don’t let people waste their time creating new resources just because they can’t find what they need.
Nearly every business shares the same concern: how do you keep your competitive edge? While there isn’t one answer to this question, there is one area that is often overlooked: knowledge management. The more time people spend looking for information that already exists, the more they’re taking time away from what brings in the bacon (or fakon for the vegetarians out there.)
Don’t reinvent the wheel
Time and again, people are creating new resources and processes not because old ones didn’t work, but because they can’t find them. The proliferation of cloud-based storage apps has only added to the possible sources and confusion.
People often have the mistaken idea that their time is not well spent when it’s used to store and organize information. They don’t realize that by deciding on a program for knowledge management upfront, they can build their success on the work that’s come before them.
Come up with a Knowledge Base (KB) and bring all of your information together for quick and easy access. You’d be surprised how quickly people come to appreciate shared resources that they know are up to date.
Knowledge comes from every direction
A lot of people look to their leaders to have all the answers. Sure, they can make decisions, but there are a whole lot of people putting in time doing things that make them the experts in their fields. Why not take advantage of all that knowledge?
Encourage people to post relevant information. It can be a blog talking about some great new features in the company’s product, or even a quick microblog sharing an article or blog you’ve found (*cough cough*). All of this can spur something in a colleague and get the ball rolling on a project you might not even know about (yet).
You can also use a people directory so everyone can identify who the experts are in every field. Help them get past that initial barrier of confusion by getting them to upload a photo so other people know who they’re looking for.
KMWorld says we know what we’re talking about
For the past five years, KMWorld has named Igloo one of the “100 Companies that Matter in Knowledge Management” — and this year is no different. This award “represents the best in innovation, creativity, and functionality” and we’re proud to have made the list for the sixth year in a row. So, what makes these 100 companies so special, when it comes to knowledge management? KMWorld Magazine says these companies “offer solutions designed to help users and customers find what they need whenever and wherever they need it,” and we couldn’t agree more. And, guess where we put that information? That’s right, in our trusty KB.
