Take away the internal complications and difficulties when hiring candidates and get the best people on board as quickly as possible.
For those looking from the outside in, hiring someone is simple: you post a job listing on your website, share on recruiting websites, choose the best looking resumes that come in, interview, select a candidate, and repeat.
But for the trusty HR folks who do this every day, there is so much more to it. How do you collect feedback on submissions? Store resumes? Get and keep track of referrals? There are a lot of options out there, but here are a few ways to simplify and streamline the process using an intranet.
Post job postings internally
One of the best ways to find candidates that are a good ‘fit’ your company is through employee referrals. The problem is that employees aren’t usually checking external job postings for the company, so they need a way to find out what jobs are available. Include a “job postings” section on your intranet, along with your referral guidelines and submission process. Make it as easy as possible for people to pass along their recommendations.
Once resumes are handed in, you can create a permission-controlled resume database where everyone involved in the hiring process can peruse resumes, add comments to provide context, and add star-based ratings that help separate the wheat from the chaff. This will narrow down the pool and help you decide who’s best for the role.
Make them feel at home
You’ve made your decision and your new star employee’s first day on the job is here already. Now, how do you help them feel at home as quickly as possible? Here are a few options:
- Create a newbie zone. Make this a safe space away from the seasoned veterans where new employees can ask any new questions they may have without fear. Include links to the information they should know in the first few days (like benefits, policies, health and safety training etc.) here so they don’t have to search.
- Have a people directory. A directory that has every employee’s name and role (and hopefully a current picture) will help a new employee connect the dots much faster than just having a quick tour through the office.
- Announce their arrival. Let your new hire feel the love right from the start by sending out a quick post letting everyone know that you have a new family member in your midst. You’ll be surprised how many warm welcomes come through.
