As our blog series celebrating Community Manager Appreciation Day continues, Bri Frei explains how McGough’s Igloo community makes posting and sharing information simple.
Bri Frei is a Marketing Coordinator at McGough, a construction firm with an unparalleled reputation in the industry, and whose rich history dates back to the late 1800s. One of their main tools for internal communication is their intranet community, powered by Igloo. Managing the intranet for McGough keeps Bri on her toes, but that doesn’t faze her one bit. Here’s what she had to say.
I: What does your day-to-day look like?
BF: My schedule changes constantly, which is one of the things I love about working in the construction industry. Depending on the week, or even the day, my schedule alters. It’s dependent on how many requests for proposals there are, press releases that need to be sent out, and any internal or external communication requests from our employees – whether it’s the intranet, external website, or social media sites.
(We get the feeling calling you “busy” is a bit of an understatement…)
I: What do you love about your job?
BF: One of the many things I really love about my job is that it’s challenging. I'm constantly problem solving, and I enjoy nothing more than a good challenge.
I: How has your intranet changed the way your organization collaborates?
BF: There’s now a “go-to” place for all of our news, from new hires, to completed projects. The intranet has been extremely beneficial when it comes to document organization. We now have one place for all our document templates, which creates consistency and a standard across the company.
(Sweet. We love a good knowledge management success story.)
I: How do offsite employees and people at different office locations fit into the picture?
BF: Internal communications is definitely one of our biggest challenges, because everyone is everywhere. The intranet has been a key tool for us, as we distribute news and updates throughout the company.
I: How do you keep members coming back?
BF: Fresh content. That’s really the key factor. We've been very fortunate to have the majority of our members happy to engage in the McGough intranet and fresh content keeps them regularly coming back.
(Fresh approach to user engagement. We dig that about you.)
I: How do you know your members are engaged?
BF: We know our members are engaged thanks to the Social Analytics feature on our intranet. It allows us to see our user engagement statistics. It’s a really nice feature to have.
I: What’s your secret to finding great stories?
BF: Our employees love sharing project successes. We never have to look too far for stories, because our employees are always sharing, and there seems to always be exciting things going on at McGough and in the construction industry. Since we launched our intranet, more and more people are starting to post their project successes on their own which is amazing. And, thanks to the notification feature, I get notified right away so I can post about it myself on the McGough blog and social media sites. It’s awesome!
(Love it. Never a dull moment over at McGough HQ.)
I: Coffee person or tea person? (Or neither… but tell us how you do it!)
BF: Team coffee all the way.
(Say no more, Bri. Say no more.)
We appreciate you, Bri. And, when it comes to McGough, it seems the feeling is very much mutual. Keep it up!
