Government

Mission Accomplished: Government

What's business social software and open government all about? It's about using social technologies to create a more nimble, open and accessible government. It's about creating something that is truly for the people by involving them in the legislative process through constituent engagement and improving the efficiency of service delivery through collaboration. And using IGLOO, these organizations have found a more open and collaborative model for delivering on this mission.

TEMS

TEMS provides emergency management consulting and information technology solutions during natural disasters. After the earthquake in Haiti, TEMS quickly mobilized resources and created a community to help coordinate relief efforts.

Due to the circumstances surrounding the crisis, the Haiti community was launched in 48 hours and quickly became an information clearinghouse for hundreds of parties involved in the response, including U.S. Government Agencies (DHS, HHS, FEMA), corporations (such as Vidéotron and Walmart), universities, private hospitals and the United Nations. The community played an instrumental role in helping to bring together and coordinate efforts of these disparate groups, even connecting an NGO with an organization that manages C-17 transport aircraft for delivering aid.

Manufacturing Innovation Network

The Manufacturing Innovation Network (MIN) is an innovation cluster, developed in partnership with local manufacturers, academic institutions, government, associations and manufacturing consortiums. The network is intended to help manufacturers build competitive advantage by promoting awareness and innovation, throughout the region and beyond.

In order to move the network into the virtual world, the MIN created an online innovation network. The community features news, expert bloggers, a company directory, trade events and a targeted job board for the industry. The next generation of the marketplace will move beyond knowledge transfer to provide a platform for transactions.

Afghanistan Challenge

The Afghanistan Challenge is a partnership between CARE Canada, Mennonite Economic Development Associates (MEDA), Rotary International, World University Service of Canada (WUSC) and the Government of Canada. Led by the Canadian Government, the Afghan Challenge gives Canadians the opportunity to engage in projects that are making a real difference in the lives of Afghan women, children and families.

Launching in only five business days, the online community brings together Canadians who want to get involved in the efforts to rebuild Afghanistan. Using Web 2.0 tools for a more social approach to fundraising, the community conveys both the challenges facing the Afghan people as well as the impact of each donation.

Canadian International
Development Agency

The Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA) is Canada's lead agency for development assistance. CIDA administers foreign aid programs in developing countries and engages in policy development in order to reduce poverty and contribute to a more secure, equitable and prosperous world.

In the fall of 2006, the Centre for International Governance Innovation (CIGI) invited the Office for Democratic Governance (ODG), a branch of the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA), to collaborate in the development of an interactive network. This network would address the knowledge sharing and collaboration needs of the ODG and Canadians working in governance and international development. Governance Village is the fruit of this proposal-a centralized, global network which connects Canadian researchers, policymakers, practitioners and their international partners to establish and share proven governance practices in development.
