October 2008 - Alpha Wiki, Messaging, Profiles and Editor Updates

by Elizabeth Hanson - 3 months ago

Below is a description of new features, functionality, and upgrades that have been added to the IGLOO online community suite during the fourth quarter of 2008.

We're excited to introduce this quarter's latest and greatest product upgrades for IGLOO's online community suite. Key highlights include:

  • Wiki (Alpha Phase only)
  • Messaging
  • Profile
  • Online Editor

 Upgrade and Release Details

1. Alpha Wiki

We're pleased to announce the IGLOO Wiki - in Alpha release only.  The Alpha Wiki will be launched to a select control group. Stay tuned for Beta release sometime in 2009!

2. Introducing... Messaging!

Messaging has joined the IGLOO suite as a collaborative and social networking tool. Now you can create and send simple messages to any member who belongs to your community or network quickly and easily. Gone is the need to open up your email inbox to send short, quick messages to members in your network.

Messaging is ideal for sending reminders, updates and questions related to members of your community. This is just another way of promoting ad-hoc collaboration across your organization.

Sending Messages:

Within your network or community, there are three places you can send a message from:

1. Member Directory
2. Your Contacts list
3. On an item's landing page

Managing Your Messages:

Messages are saved and stored in your Message tab (in your Profile). From here you can:

  • Select messages, mark as read, mark as unread and delete
  • View new messages that display with a "star"
  • Filter messages for easy browsing by "flagging" them
  • Set notification to receive an email when you have received a new message
  • Link to your Messages from your user bar

3. Profiles (formerly in My Dashboard)

We've brought your user experience completely in context by moving Profiles to the Member Directory space. Your profile functionally has not changed, just its location. Most notably, your Account information (now called "Login Setting") has been moved from the main tab navigation into the Edit Profile section. You'll notice that My Dashboard has been removed from your User Bar; simply clicking on your name opens up your Profile.

What do other people see when they visit your profile section?

Other users will only be able to see your Profile tab. From here they can send you a message or add you as a contact.

4. Editor

  • Embed Tool: We've made it easier for users to embed files, like YouTube videos, to their page content. No HTML is required with the new Embed Tool; you can just copy directly from the source and paste in the Embed Code Block field provided!

  • Preview Button: Preview opens the page you're editing in a new browser window instead of inline, giving you more control for viewing.
  • Image Inserter: Browsing images in the image inserter just became easier. Now hovering over the image displays the name of the image making it easier to find the correct image for insertion.

5. Notable Mentions

1. Single file upload has changed to provide the user with a status bar (much like the multi-file upload has).

2. In the Control Panel, administrators can click on a member's name to open a page to manage that particular user. The page has been refined to include:

  • a drop down of available groups that the user can be added too
  • a quick remove action that removes the user from the specified group
  • a revoke membership link

3. Our Google Analytics integration is now compatible with both the 'old' urchin.js code and the 'new' ga.js code. Administrators are required to input the UA number for Google tracking to be set up. The existing version of the tracker should continue to function until the end of 2008. Note: Google will only roll out new features on the new ga.js tracker.
