Social software - focusing on the "people side" of your business.

Social software solutions focus on helping companies improve the "people side" of their business. You know, the messy stuff. The personal and team conversations, collaborations and interactions. The stuff that is hard to measure and even harder to manage and control. It may be the most important part of any successful business, as companies don't build products, do deals or make service calls - People Do.

So, what's the business driver? It's all about increasing corporate capacity and creating…

Recent Gartner report says they will. What do you think?

Gartner just released a new report called "Predicts 2010: Social Software Is an Enterprise Reality"  summarizing the direction of enterprise social software over the next five years or so. One of the most interesting predictions they make is that through 2012, over 70 percent of IT- dominated social media initiatives will fail. This is an amazing and bold prediction but it is not a prediction that surprises me.

If you go back to the 90's (easy for those of us over 40)... think about how many…

NING customers left out in the cold.

Lots and lots of conversation and debate over the past 2 days about Ning and their decision to drop free online networks and layoff 40% of their staff. The reason: wanting to focus on their high value premium networks like Friends or Enemies, Linkin Park, Shred or Die and Pickens Plan. According to new CEO, Jason Rosenthal these sites and others drive almost 75% of their US traffic.

As a fellow CEO, I understand the need to drive top line revenue. I also understand the need to focus. But what I…

It is all about creating incremental business value.

Almost every CIO that I speak with asks the same question: "How can I measure the return on investment (ROI) of social software and social media solutions?" For me, measuring the ROI of social software is not about monetization, but actually measuring the incremental value it brings to your business. It is about measuring how well an employee, a team or even the entire company is doing in meeting the business challenges they are trying to address.

Here are some typical areas which social…

Corporate compliance and social software... are they compatible?

One of the biggest challenges facing most organizations when implementing a social media strategy -  is corporate compliance. Unlike consumer social software like Facebook® or LinkedIn... their are corporate rules and ramifications to consider before you blog, tweet or even comment on behalf of your company. Many companies are so worried about the negative implications, that they have actually banned and/or turned off access to social media sites like Facebook.

I think this type of "knee jerk"…

Are they both cost effective?

Social software and collaboration technology is hot. According to Forrester Research, 32% of organizations have or plan to implement social technologies in their enterprise in 2010. It's today's "must-have" technology for business, as software vendors add social elements to just about every platform you can think of.

In David Greenfield's latest ZDNet blog post entitled Open Source Collaboration: The Right Solution in a Tight Economy, he suggests that open source may be the right choice in light…

Converging Forces...

A big change or shift is happening right before our eyes in the hi-tech sector (software, hardware, networking, mobile etc). Some see it, some don't and some choose to ignore it. But if you take a moment, step back and take a quick look at what is happening in the high tech sector - I think some of you might be quite surprised. Why? Because there are some real disruptive forces converging... and maturing all at once which I believe will dramatically change how software is purchased, delivered,…

Is there a catch?

I have been asked a lot recently "Why is IGLOO Software offering free online communities?" and "What's the catch?"

My thinking behind free online business communities is quite simple:

  1. Customers want to "try before they buy" when looking for a software solution
  2. We want to showcase to the market that IGLOO Software is a great social software business alternative to Microsoft SharePoint, Lotus Connections or Jive Software
  3. Many small vendors like IGLOO Software do not get a fair shake from some of the…

Summary: This is my 4th and final article in my Security series of SaaS-based applications.

Of the four areas of SaaS security, the concept of pure Data Security is perhaps the hardest to define. In fact all four blogs in this series were about some aspect of keeping your data secure in a SaaS model, but when I think of "data", I think of two quite different concepts:

  1. The actual bits and bytes that exist somewhere on your SaaS vendors servers (these bits and bytes can be transmitted, processed and displayed for the application's purposes).
  2. The thoughts, ideas and concepts that make up…

So far, I’ve explored some of the ways physical and application security contribute to a secure and robust SaaS offering. In this, the third part of my 4-part series, I’ll discuss network security.

To get this article started, I think we need to define what a network is.  To put it simply, the network in a SaaS offering is the infrastructure by which the web browser communicates with the web application. A simple example is connecting to Facebook... where Internet Explorer is the web browser and Facebook is the application.  Most networks include physical components like routers, firewalls, switches and even the actual wires. It also includes the "language" of communication like TCP/IP, HT…
